Is your charter school in legal compliance... or are you a lawsuit waiting to happen?
Any school receiving federal funds of any amount is required to identify ,address, and accommodate dyslexics and those with reading handicaps and specific learning disabilities!
Also any school receiving federal funds of any amount is required to have a 504 and/ or special education ARD committee and to train their staff in -identifying dyslexia--accommodations--teaching at-risk dyslexic readers- using approved research-based methods.
Finally any school receiving federal funds of any amount is required to inform parents yearly about dyslexia and what the school is doing in that area.
TRAIN YOUR TEACHERS. INFORM YOUR PARENTS. We can help
504 COMMITTEES-
Two senate bills became effective Sept 1, 2011- ( 866, 867 by Deuell)
They will require all prospective teachers seeking certification as educators to have training in understanding dyslexia. They stipulate that the state must offer appropriate testing accommodations to testers who have documented disabilities (such as dyslexia) when these testers take state certification exams AND they state that a school must consider outside testing done for dyslexia and not simply set it aside.
Schools ( public AND charter) must also educate their families YEARLY regarding characteristics of and assistance available for dyslexic and other 504 students.
Schools CANNOT simply use a computer program to provide dyslexia services. They also must provide multi-sensory dyslexia assistance in middle and hgh school, including instruction and not simply accommodations.
Finally, schools may NOT simply "re-test" a student without considering former or outside testing and qualification as dyslexic.
Know your rights. Knowledge is power.
SCHOOLS- Shrinking budgets- growing needs- How does your school succeed in spite of that?
One answer is to provide low-cost professional training and preparation for your teachers. Visit our Other Services and Fees Page for more info. We can tailor a workshop to your school's particular needs.
Another idea is to contract a reading professional's services rather than having to hire a full time reading professional on staff. We can assess the need and help find professionals to serve your at-risk readers with you.
When considering qualification and services , keep in mind that the application of a qualifying disability is now being applied more wdely:
A student does NOT have to be failing classes, TAKS or STAAR to qualify as having a reading disability. A student does not have to be in an extended "RTI" cycle to be evaluated for dyslexia. Read the TEA dyslexia handbook yourself!
